A plan you can follow.
Use the point order below between runs, then use the skill priorities inside a run. Choose the checkpoint that matches your available talent points.
These are permanent talent points spent between runs, not levels reached inside a run.
No specific equipment, gear-star level, race bonus or teammate is assumed. Upgrade priorities depend on the cards actually offered.
Pain and apparitions
Shadow Word: Pain, free Mind Blasts and death spread
Develop the Shadow milestones in order, then use Discipline reduction, shield strength and cooldown recovery to support the completed Pain engine.

Point order, skills & alternatives
Before using this plan
- Shadowy Apparitions changes the opening to Shadow Word: Pain at permanent point 21. Shadowform spreading and death bursts arrive at point 31; neither is assumed for a fresh character.

Why these points come first
- Points 1–5: Supply recovery from ordinary kills while the Shadow engine is still incomplete.
- Points 6–7: Extend Pain when it is offered.
- Points 8–10: Build general critical chance and open the first Shadow milestone.
- Points 11: Add the named maximum-health component to Shadow hits.
- Points 12–15: Support ordinary Mind Blast casts before the separate free-cast milestone exists.
- Points 16–20: Improve the shared damage school rather than adding another unrelated spell.
- Points 21: At point 21, gain the Pain opening and its chance to call a free Mind Blast.
- Points 22: Complete ordinary cooldown support; do not confuse it with the free-cast trigger.
- Points 23–24: Complete critical chance for direct hits in the route.
- Points 25: Add a chance of Shadow control and reach the upper-row gate.
- Points 26–28: Increase the ongoing damage that anchors the plan.
- Points 29–30: Add damage-based healing before the capstone.
- Points 31: At point 31, add the conditional death burst and Pain transfer.
- Points 32–36: Start Discipline with reduction that does not change the opening spell.
- Points 37–39: Strengthen the selected defensive spell.
- Points 40–41: Add maximum health and reach the cooldown-recovery row.
- Points 42–46: Support recovery of ordinary casts throughout the toolkit.
- Points 47–51: Finish with general damage while avoiding a competing starting-spell milestone.
Skills to look for
Use this priority when the relevant choice is offered. A route does not guarantee a particular card.
- Shadow Word: Pain
Duration, Shadow Power, Apparitions and Shadowform all support this ongoing-damage core.
If it is missing: Smite — Before the Shadow opening is unlocked, keep the actual starter viable while watching for the offered Shadow spell.
- Mind Blast
Its direct hit complements Pain, and the route includes both ordinary cooldown support and the separate Apparitions free-cast trigger.
If it is missing: Mind Flay — Use the offered Shadow cone and slow while waiting for Mind Blast.
- Power Word: Shield
The secondary allocation explicitly strengthens its absorb to preserve room for Pain to tick.
If it is missing: Renew — Use a healing choice if the shield is absent, remembering that Renew is gradual and health-triggered.
- Devouring Plague
A second Shadow DoT can use Shadow Power and add damage-dependent recovery.
If it is missing: Psychic Scream — Choose space against ordinary surrounding enemies when another damage effect is less urgent; bosses are immune to its fear.
Inside the run
- Before the changed opener
- Support the available attack and avoid planning around guaranteed Pain ticks. Revisit the opening after allocating the 21st permanent point.
- Pain established
- Prioritize its coverage and damage before broadening the spell pool. Add a shield or recovery when movement is being interrupted.
- Groups versus a boss
- Let deaths within affected groups feed Shadowform spread; on a lone boss, assess ordinary DoT uptime and Mind Blast rather than expecting a chain of death bursts.
Change one thing
- Pain is missing below point 21
- Use the starter and an available direct Shadow spell; the low-budget prefix is a path toward the engine, not the full engine.
- You survive but enemies do not die
- Improve Pain or Mind Blast before adding another defensive spell; Shadowform cannot spread from targets that remain alive.
- Sudden bursts bypass gradual healing
- Prioritize an offered shield and improve your route. Damage-based healing does not guarantee recovery before the next hit.
- 31 Shadow and 20 Discipline leave Divine Aegis and Rapture unselected; the shield is an ordinary strengthened absorb, not an automatic shield-break loop.
- Kill healing and death spread have less fuel against a durable target with no adds.
The point order follows the checked 0.125.0 client requirements. Spell priorities and gameplay suggestions are editorial and have not been combat-tested. A legal allocation does not establish the strongest build or a proven clear rate.

Make Pain the damage engine, let its ticks trigger Mind Blast, and use a shield to preserve movement while the effects spread.
Shadow Word: Pain
Starts the run with Shadow Word: Pain; its ticks can trigger free Mind Blasts, subject to a rate limit. An enemy dying with Shadow Word: Pain explodes and passes the effect to a nearby enemy.
Shadowy Apparitions / ShadowformMind Blast
Starts the run with Shadow Word: Pain; its ticks can trigger free Mind Blasts, subject to a rate limit. Shortens Mind Blast's cooldown.
Shadowy Apparitions / Improved Mind BlastPower Word: Shield
Makes Power Word: Shield the opening spell and turns a broken shield into Holy damage around you. Immediately replaces a broken Power Word: Shield, subject to a trigger interval.
Divine Aegis / Rapture / Improved Power Word: ShieldDevouring Plague
Increases damage-over-time effects, including Devouring Plague.
Shadow PowerYour opening priorities.
Check that your selected Shadow route provides the Pain opening. Support Pain before adding a second unrelated damage plan.
Read Shadowy Apparitions and Shadowform together: one connects Pain ticks to Mind Blast, while the other rewards the death of an affected enemy.
Add Power Word: Shield when incoming hits interrupt your movement. The shield is time to reach open ground, not a reason to stop moving.
When the plan stalls.
Choose the row that describes your last attempt.
Pain is reaching enemies, but the first target will not fall.
Try this Compare direct damage support with Seal of the Damned’s faster ongoing-damage ticks.
Shadowform’s transfer depends on an affected enemy dying. More unfinished targets do not produce that event.
Groups clear, but your health collapses while damage is ticking.
Try this Take a shield or recovery option before another offensive branch.
Pain needs time to work. An absorb or recovery effect addresses the survival gap without replacing the damage engine.
The wave feels strong and the isolated encounter feels slow.
Try this Look at Pain and Mind Blast support that still matters without nearby deaths.
A lone target gives the spreading effect fewer opportunities. Judge that part of the run separately from a dense crowd.
Give your gear a purpose.
Compare faster ongoing-damage ticks or cooldown reduction with an absorb or recovery choice.
A trap to avoid.
Stacking shield and healing choices until you can stay alive but cannot finish the enemy that would start a spread.
The spreading effect depends on finishing affected enemies. A durable isolated target is a different test from a crowded wave.
